Getting a good night’s sleep is already difficult. When you add shoulder pain at night, resting becomes even harder.

A pinched shoulder nerve often forms when bone spurs grow around the spinal discs. As you age, the vertebrae compress and the discs thin. Because of this, bone spurs may grow in the area and press on the nerve root.
Pain usually affects one shoulder. It often becomes worse when you turn your head. Some people also feel “pins and needles” in the area.
Burning shoulder pain can come from bursitis. This happens when repetitive motions or long periods of pressure irritate the bursae around a joint. Leaning on your elbows for too long is one simple example.
Bursae are small, fluid-filled sacs that sit between bones, tendons, and muscles. They help your joints move smoothly and without friction. When they become inflamed, burning pain can follow.
Tendonitis can create a similar burning sensation. In this case, the tendons in the shoulder become irritated from repeated movements. This is common in athletes such as baseball pitchers. However, anyone who lifts heavy objects or repeats the same shoulder motion can develop tendonitis.

A “crook in the neck” or “crick in the neck” is not a formal medical term. People use it to describe neck stiffness or discomfort linked to poor sleeping posture. A pillow that is too high or too thick can hold the neck at an awkward angle. As a result, the pain may travel into the shoulder at night.
Without a proper diagnosis, it can be difficult to understand what is causing the pain. Shoulder discomfort may actually come from the cervical or thoracic spine. Because of this, it is important to see the right healthcare professional.
When neck issues trigger shoulder pain, treatment becomes important. Several nerves run from the neck into the shoulder. Nerve roots C3 through C8 pass through the shoulder region.

Pinched nerves in the neck may also cause headaches. When the nerve becomes compressed, it sends pain along its pathway. These headaches often start at the back of the head and move toward the forehead. People also feel tenderness in the muscles on the side of the neck.
Cervical radiculopathy is the medical term for a compressed nerve in the upper spine. Shoulder or neck pain is a common symptom. Finding the exact source of the pain helps doctors create a clear treatment plan.
Pain behind the ear or near the base of the skull can be difficult to identify. Several issues can cause this discomfort. Infection, inflammation, and injury are all possible reasons. Symptoms vary and may include jaw tenderness, eye pain, skin changes, or even tooth pain.
